The Success 2011 XLT, Mun Rescue Mission, Season 2: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

This Season 2 stream on GopherCraft's multiplayer server has two halves. It opens with The Success 2010 XLT in orbit around Eve, where a landing with no heat shield and no power ends with the ship burning up and the Flight Results calling it a Catastrophic Failure. Basket then spends a big pile of science, builds The Success 2011 XLT with spare seats for a rescue, and flies it to the Mun to pick up Jebediah Kerman. The flight goes well right up to the last few meters, and the stream ends with the ship breaking apart on the Mun's surface.

Plan B at Eve

The map shows The Success 2010 XLT on a long orbit around the purple planet Eve. The first idea is a hop over to Gilly, a moon of Eve, but landing on Eve itself has a catch: "I can't really take off from Eve very easily." A test burn settles it. "It's actually a pretty long burn," too long for the fuel on board, so Basket goes to plan B and heads down to Eve's surface instead.

The ship has no landing legs and no heat shield under the engines, so the idea is to drop the engine and come down on parachutes. "There's a high chance that this will fail." The engine goes, and then the ship will not turn. "I ran out of power so it wouldn't even turn." It falls into the atmosphere at over 3,700 m/s.

The parts overheat one after another. The Flight Results read "Outcome: Catastrophic Failure!", with the Mk1 Command Pod, the science gear, the solar arrays and the parachutes all exploding "due to overheating," and the line "Bertris Kerman was killed." The commentary sums it up: "so now we know that there's an atmosphere and things burn up in the atmosphere."

A ship with spare seats

Back at the Space Center there is plenty to spend. The research tree opens at 3,186.1 science and Basket goes down the list, looking at the Surface Scanning Module, the GRAVMAX Negative Gravioli Detector, the Z-4K Rechargeable Battery Bank and the Mk1-2 Command Pod, until the counter reads 76.1.

The new mission comes next. "Let's try both rescuing and doing science on the Mun. That's what our plan is." In the Vehicle Assembly Building the three-seat Mk1-2 Command Pod goes on top, then a PPD-10 Hitchhiker Storage Container, "because if we're going to rescue people, we want them to be able to get into something." Ladders get rotated so a kerbal can climb from the pod all the way down to the landing legs. A service bay is supposed to hold the science parts, but the goo canisters will not attach inside it. "What's the point of a service bay if you can't attach the thing?" They go back on the outside, along with more parachutes, bigger batteries and backup solar panels. "This is the success 2011 XLT."

Magvy Kerman (Pilot) and Barchel Kerman (Engineer) take the pod, Tatiana Kerman (Scientist) takes the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2, and the Hitchhiker seats stay empty for whoever gets picked up.

Off to the Mun

Step one is "see if it actually launches." It does, though the gravity turn stays gentle because the ship keeps trying to roll. The outer boosters drop away, the ship settles into orbit around Kerbin, and a burn sets up the trip to the Mun. A capture burn and two small fixes leave it in orbit there.

From orbit the lab gets to work: "Lab Analysis on Materials Study while in space high over the Mun Complete." Magvy climbs out for an EVA report over the Mun and climbs back in.

Which ship has Jeb?

This is a shared server, so the commentary checks first that nobody else has already done the rescue. The tracking station lists The Success 2009 XLT and Raysy Kerman still landed at Minmus. On the Mun there is The Success 2001 XLT Ship, which turns out to be empty, and Basket terminates it. Then The Success 2008 XLT, landed at the Mun, and the commentary settles it: that is the ship with Jeb.

Jeb's ship sits on the dark side of the Mun. A viewer suggests time-warping a few more orbits until it is in sunlight, and the loops drag on. "Go faster, go, go, go." Once the crater comes into the light, Basket lines up a landing. "I want to land inside the crater."

The last few meters

The descent goes to plan. The big engine is dropped, a burn kills most of the speed, and the ship falls upright toward the crater. Then: "Oh no, I hit the wrong button!" With the ship still about 1,700 meters up, the stage counter drops to zero and an engine section tumbles away beside it. "I forgot to add extra staging just in case." The parachutes go out anyway, though "parachutes don't do anything" here.

The ship hits the ground. A message reads "[LT-2 Landing Strut]: Overstressed," and the hull breaks apart in two explosions.

Where it ends

"Well, so everything was perfect except for this last little bit." The plan for next time is simple: "So next time, same ship. I think the ship's great." The stream ends there, with wreckage in the Mun crater, Jeb still waiting in The Success 2008 XLT, and the Minmus crew still on Minmus.
