Season 5 is a new single-player game of Kerbal Space Program with mods, started fresh in Science mode. The commentary runs through the additions at the start: bases on other planets, orbital colonies, and life support, which means the kerbals now need supplies. It also sets the goal for the season: "My plan is to have as little deaths as possible, no deaths possibly if we can." This first stream flies three short hops with Jebediah Kerman, then switches to unmanned probes. It ends in the VAB with nobody lost.
Science on the launch pad
The first craft is a Mk1 Command Pod with a goo canister, and Jebediah Kerman never leaves the pad. The goo is observed, a crew report is filed, and Jebediah climbs out for an EVA report and a surface sample. The EVA window now has a "Safe to deploy?" line, and the commentary notices that kerbals "have their own personal parachutes" in the newer game.
A second pod gets a 2HOT Thermometer. The surface sample on the pad gives the same result as before, so Jebediah walks off the concrete until the game reads "Surface Sample from KSC". The research tree now has life support parts mixed in with the stock ones, such as the K&K Oxygen Regenerator and the Life Support MiniPak. "There's a bunch of handy stuff here for life support that I'll have to eventually figure out."
Science3 goes up
Science3 adds an RT-5 "Flea" Solid Fuel Booster, a Mk16 Parachute, fins and a barometer. The commentary already wants probes: "I want to be able to test out designs with no dudes inside of it." The Flea carries the pod high enough for a crew report from Kerbin's upper atmosphere, and the parachute opens once it reads safe. The pod splashes down off the coast, and Jebediah takes a surface sample from the water.
The new Life Support Status window lists Jebediah Kerman as "starving", since no food went along. "I didn't add any food." The Mission Summary for Science3 counts nine experiments and 57.0 science, for a total of 62.
Probes take over
Science4test swaps the pilot for a Probodobodyne Stayputnik on top of an SC-9001 Science Jr., with solid fuel boosters below and Mk2-R Radial-Mount Parachutes on the sides. "We're going unmanned because we're very responsible Space Command people." The first flight comes down on the grass near the runway, and the Science Jr. data is recovered. "I didn't think that this would work without people."
Fins go on for the second flight, and it still tumbles when the stages switch. Viewers point out SAS. "So SAS is important, is what you're saying." The third flight adds batteries, more experiments and SAS from liftoff, and lands in the water under its parachutes for another recovery.
Science5Robot reaches space
New research brings liquid fuel engines. Science5Robot is an LV-T45 "Swivel" core with BACC "Thumper" boosters around it. It climbs over the bay and out of the atmosphere. A maneuver node is set for an orbit, but the fuel runs out partway through the burn. "So it's going to land, unfortunately."
Up high, the goo observation and a temperature scan are sent home, and the game reports science added for each. The materials study is worth more if it is carried back. The commentary asks viewers for a vote and reads out the answer: "Transmitting is safe, yes." Halfway through the upload the screen warns "Not enough Electric Charge" and the transmission aborts. "I ran out of battery and now it's screwed."
Where it ends
With no power, nothing on the craft responds. It falls back through a long wall of flame, and the parachutes never open. The Flight Results read "Outcome: Catastrophic Failure!": the fins and the Swivel overheated, and the Science Jr. and the heat shield splashed down hard and were destroyed. The highest altitude was 655,142 meters. No kerbal was aboard. "Yeah, transmitting wasn't safe."
Back at the Space Center, the next research is just out of reach. "We're so so close to affording it, but we can't." In the VAB, the Stayputnik's description says it "will cease to function if power runs out," and Science5Robot gets more parts before it is saved. The stream ends there, with no kerbal lost so far.
