Gathering Science, Season 5, Episode 2: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Season 5 is a modded single-player game, and one of its goals is that no kerbal dies. This stream picks up with Science5Robot, the probe the last stream left in the VAB, now with fins on. "I'm just trying to make it so my guys don't die at all if possible, so I'm doing a lot of unmanned missions." Four robot flights follow. One crashes, one reaches orbit around Kerbin and one reaches orbit around the Mun. Then Jebediah Kerman flies Science8 to orbit and back, with a life support tank along, and comes home safe.

Science5Robot tries again

The Space Center shows 44.6 science at the start. Science5Robot climbs on its boosters, but the electric charge runs out before the burn for orbit is done. "Yeah, we're out of juice." It comes back down instead, and the experiments are run and stored on the way. The reentry glows, and the parachutes open over the dark. It lands in Kerbin's Highlands, where it observes the goo one more time before it is recovered.

The Mission Summary lists 10 experiments recovered and 101.4 science earned, for 145. In the research tree a 45 science node brings the counter from 146 to 101 and unlocks struts. Then the 90 science node with better batteries and solar panels is bought too.

Science6Robot

The next rocket, Science6, gets an antenna, new solar panels, liquid fuel boosters in place of some of the solid ones, and a life support tank. The tank goes below the heat shield, on the far side of a decoupler, to see whether a kerbal in the capsule can still use it. Jebediah is put aboard and the rocket rolls out to the pad. Viewers suggest testing it without a crew first, and the commentary gives in: "All right, you win." The vessel is recovered from the pad, a probe core goes on, and the crew is removed. The name field now reads Science6Robot.

It lifts off at night and banks on its own, but it never gets near orbit. The Flight Results read "Outcome: Catastrophic Failure!" The highest altitude was 18,213 meters, and parts splashed down hard and were destroyed. Nobody was aboard.

Science7Robot reaches orbit

More boosters, nose cones and struts make Science7Robot. This time the solid boosters burn out first, the rocket turns slowly toward the horizon, and the burn at the maneuver node ends with "we have engine power, and we have an orbit." With the Mun set as the target, a 22 second burn comes up short of an encounter. The probe runs its experiments high over Kerbin, sends the data home on solar power and stays there. "So that ship just lives here now."

Science8Robot at the Mun

Science8Robot gets more fuel tanks and a pair of new batteries. It reaches orbit, and the next burn sets up an encounter with the Mun, with "a tiny bit of fuel left." Near the Mun a seven second burn puts it in orbit. "And now we are in an orbit of the Mun."

The goo, the thermometer, the barometer and the materials bay all run high over the Mun, and the data goes home over the antenna. There is not enough fuel to come back. "I think this guy will just live for now in orbit of the Mun." Back at the Space Center the counter reads 86.2, and the commentary holds off on more research.

Jebediah flies Science8

Science8 gets four fins in place of the single one, and Jebediah Kerman climbs in. It reaches orbit around Kerbin with fuel left over, and Jebediah sends home a crew report and an EVA report.

The Life Support Status window answers the question from earlier. It lists Jebediah Kerman with 46 days of supplies (+15d), so the tank on the far side of the heat shield counts. "Even though it's on the other side of a heat shield, on the other side of a decoupler, it's still inside the vessel."

A burn drops the orbit into the atmosphere. During reentry something glows and breaks away, and the commentary finds it: "we lost one of the batteries on this side." The rest holds, and the parachutes open over green hills. Science8 lands on a slope and tips onto its side.

The landing is in Kerbin's Highlands. Jebediah files a crew report and the materials bay is observed, but the game says "All hatches are obstructed, can't exit," so there is no EVA or surface sample. The vessel is recovered. "Success, nobody's died."

Where it ends

The Mission Summary for Science8 lists 6 experiments recovered, including "Recovery of a vessel returned from Kerbin orbit," and 24.4 science earned, for 143. The stream ends at the Space Center with 143.1 science. Science7Robot is still orbiting Kerbin, Science8Robot is orbiting the Mun, and Jebediah is home.
