Pipe Science, Episode 19: Oxygen Not Included Season 1

  • Published on

Episode 19 of Season 1 is a stream that picks up on Cycle 66, where Episode 18 left off, with no food in storage and power short. A second natural gas generator goes in, beds and more oxygen get planned, and then most of the video goes into getting polluted water to flow up to the water filters. It ends on Cycle 70 with the pipes still being rebuilt.

A new duplicant and a second generator

The stream opens at the Printing Pod, and a new duplicant joins, bringing the count to 17. On the Jobs screen, someone good at running is set to power: "So your entire job is just power."

The natural gas generator is "actually maxed out," so another one goes down beside it, wired across to the outside power grid with a wire bridge. Then the commentary catches a problem: "I guess I didn't consider the output of carbon dioxide." A gas bridge and a vent go in so the carbon dioxide "will just dump down here."

The game's gas plumbing overlay: white gas pipes with orange and green pieces around the white outline of a machine not yet built, green output and white intake markers, a pipe running down to the right, and build text reading Build Tool, Click to Build, Granite: 71470 Kg / 25 Kg, above part of a Gas Pipe menu

On Cycle 68 the new Natural Gas Generator reads Awaiting Material Delivery, needing 800 Kg of copper ore. Before long, "now both things are running."

Two floors of the base, the upper one with machines under green funnels, the lower one with the white outline of a building not yet built beside an orange machine, part of a plumbing menu at the left, and hover cards reading Natural Gas Generator, Awaiting Material Delivery, Copper Ore: 800 Kg, and Carbon Dioxide, Unbreathable, 385.9 g, 31.1 °C

Cooks, beds and air

"It's because I've made everything else too high priority, they're not making food. So my fault, my bad." The good cook is set to only cook. "We're short on beds," too. On the oxygen overlay large parts of the base show red, so an oxygen producer and a row of cots are planned together, at priority 7.

Clean water, dirty water

On Cycle 69, "some of the polluted water has finally worked its way over," and that shows a flaw in the plan: the filtered water gets dumped straight back into the polluted pool. "I clean it, I filter it out, and then I immediately dump it back into the polluted water." A Liquid Pipe Bridge sends the clean water past it instead.

Then: "Everybody's sleeping, I just realized," and with power low, "nothing's flowing right now." Almost all the water is polluted, and the commentary notices it is feeding the power side, not the water filters. A new pipe is meant to carry it up, but "it doesn't know which direction this stuff should go." Pipes go in, come out, and go in again a different way. "Okay, plan B."

The game's liquid plumbing overlay with a tangle of white pipes dotted blue and yellow green, green output and white intake markers, labels reading Liquid Pipe, and a hover card reading Fertilizer Maker, Using Polluted Water: 150 g/s, Emitting Fertilizer: 120 g/s, Emitting Natural Gas: 18.3 g/s, Heat Production: 3.8 W

The freed critter, and where it ends

Back on Cycle 68 the commentary wanted to free a critter so it "can just roam around my base." On Cycle 70 a critter labeled Puft floats through the base, with slime beside it. The commentary says it "eats polluted oxygen" and puts out slime. The water is pumping again too: "We have a lot of water coming through here now."

A hazy green room below a floor of orange machines and pipes, a small round yellow critter floating in the middle, a row of white tool markers at the left, a duplicant's head with a temperature icon above it at the bottom left, and part of the resource list at the right edge

The last pipe gets bumped to priority 9: "I'm trying to science, guys. Please build that." The alerts still show Food shortage, Stressed and Insufficient oxygen generation when the video ends.
