New Colony, Episode 2: Oxygen Not Included Season 4

  • Published on

Season 4 opens with a brand new game. The commentary says there have been "lots of updates since I played last," so this stream is partly a reunion with the game and partly a first look at what changed. Three duplicants land in a fresh colony, and over the hour they get storage, an outhouse, power, a med-bed, research, food and farms. A flood nearly drowns one of them. When the stream ends there are six duplicants, a stack of three floors, and a warning that the colony is short on oxygen.

A new game

The stream starts on the game's main menu. A standard game gets picked, "'cause I don't really know what options I would even pick." The game offers three duplicants: Bubbles, Hassan and Travaldo. The commentary notices that interests are new, so a duplicant now "likes to cook." The colony is named BasketCase.

The first jobs are basic. A storage box goes in, set to take everything except dirt, in the hope that the little critters will eat the dirt and leave coal behind. A ladder goes up beside the first room, plants get set to auto-harvest, and cots go in for sleeping. The duplicants pick up a few tasks and then stall: there is no ladder down to the work, so "they couldn't get down to all this." They also take breaks now. "So they actually have downtime."

A duplicant with a glowing tool works beside a tall ladder outline at the edge of a small dug-out room holding a large arched machine, a yellow box and a cot outline, with dirt and rock all around

Outhouse, power and a flood

An outhouse room gets dug below, with a wash basin "so they wash their hands after they go to the bathroom." Copper unlocks more buildings, and power generators go in next. A lot of coal turns up nearby.

Getting water to the wash basin takes some rebuilding, with a floor laid so the water pools where the duplicants can reach it. Then the water goes wrong: "for some reason the water has become turbulent." Hassan ends up at the bottom of a flooded pit. The ladder out gets a higher priority and goes in, and the commentary sums it up: "that was close, that was really close."

A pool of water fills a dug-out space beside a stone floor with a green hand pump, a duplicant labeled Hassan is under the water at the bottom, and a ladder outline is being placed below

Right after, the game asks for a fourth duplicant, and Nisbet joins as the digger. The game then says the colony needs a med bay. A Med-Bed goes in, assigned to Hassan, whose status lines read Hypothermia and Hungry while the duplicant receives care.

Research and mush bars

A research station goes in, and Basic Farming is the first research. Plumbing comes next on the research screen. A bottle emptier lets the duplicants move spilled water to one spot, and the power and oxygen jobs get the top priorities: "you need that power to be able to power the oxygen."

Food is mush bars for now. "You're eating mush bars, what do you expect?" The jobs board is the next goal, and the game's hint says it unlocks with Advanced Research, which is already in progress.

Three stacked floors beside a ladder: an arched machine, boxes and cots on top, wheel generators, stacked supplies and a research desk in the middle, and outhouses with a wash basin at the bottom, next to a pool of water

Planters and carbon dioxide

A compost goes into "the stinky area" of the base, and a farm room goes in with a row of planters. Their growth halts until they get dirt, then "everything's fine." Down below, carbon dioxide collects: "there's too much gas down here," and nothing is ready to deal with it yet.

Two more duplicants arrive from the game's DNA blueprint choices, one for building and one for digging. A water cooler goes into the food area, an Algae Terrarium adds oxygen, and the jobs board goes on a wall. The Microbe Musher now has a Liceloaf recipe, and one gets queued. A dig into obsidian fails, because the colony "lacks appropriate miners."

A row of planters with dark leafy plants on a stone floor at upper left, white outlines of planned buildings below it, a long ladder down the middle, and machines and the arched structure on the floors to the right

Where it ends

The last plan is to move a ladder lower so the carbon dioxide drains away from the rooms. Then the commentary ends the stream. The top bar shows six duplicants, 28,382 kcal of food, no research selected, and "Insufficient oxygen generation."
