Giant Key, Episode 25: Quern

  • Published on

This stream of Quern opens in the middle of a puzzle, with a key made of turning pieces. Getting it right lowers a tower and leads down into a set of tunnels, where a giant key machine takes up most of the middle of the video. After that come a ring of lights and a room of weights and ladders. The video ends with that room solved and the game saving in a mine tunnel.

The key with turning pieces

The video starts on the key in close view, its pieces being turned one way and then another. It goes into a lock on a stone panel with three knobs, and nothing the commentary tries works at first. "I mean there must be a thing somewhere, it's supposed to give me a hint." A search of the nearby room finds none, so it comes down to trying every arrangement.

The answer turns out to be simpler. "I had to do an X, not a plus." The whole structure lowers into the ground instead of giving a ladder, and the game awards an achievement called "Too lazy to climb." An elevator takes Basket down to a basement, and the torch left up top is handed back.

Tunnels under the island

Down in the tunnels, a voice speaks with subtitles on screen. These chambers were a refuge from "the Endless Noon," it says, and the speaker regrets leading someone here: "What a mistake it was." A letter on a desk says the tunnels "were carved out by the Dalmarians once" and warns about a woman who will try to turn the reader against its writer. "I don't believe you at all," the commentary answers.

The giant key machine

"Aha, a gigantic key." It sits in a machine with four columns of numbers, one to six in each, and a note marked with two colors. Yellow: "One of the key parts is among the components of the solution." White: "One of the key parts is in its appropriate place." Each time the key goes in, a set of square lamps lights up white, orange or not at all.

For a long while this goes nowhere. The lamps sometimes go dark, and the same key seems to give different answers. A viewer suggests the dots above the lamps count the guesses left, and the commentary agrees: "I bet that's the number of guesses." That means starting over, and this time keeping notes.

The rule the commentary settles on is that white means the right number in the right place and orange the right number in the wrong place. Guess by guess, the notes narrow it down: 1, 4, 5, 6, for one, gives two whites and an orange. "Cross our fingers, because this is the last guess." The commentary reads that last guess as 1, 4, 3, 5, and it works: "Thank God."

A rusty panel of numbered slots, 1 to 6 in each column, in Quern: a white 4 and a white 3 lit in two columns, the 1, 2, 5 and 6 of the right column lit yellow, a row of key teeth below and a note pinned to the shelf beside it

A second combination and a ring of lights

A small part from the machine fits a lock down where the torch was, and a sign shows the combination for another key. The commentary works it out from the shapes on the sign and resets the key: "Okay, take the key." It opens a door into a cupboard with a gear and a column of rings. Turning the rings carries a white light through bent pipe shapes from the bottom up. "Oh, there we go, I did it."

Using the gear and the new piece, Basket comes away with "a brick with little knobbies on it." Set in place, the brick starts an elevator that goes down instead of up. "I thought I was gonna go up."

Weights and ladders

At the bottom is a long bridge to a round platform, and then a room the commentary calls another puzzle room: "I'm gonna try to figure this out on my own, so don't give me any hints yet." Three ladders turn on posts, levers hang weights on them, and a lever brings the weights back.

The heavy, medium and light weights get tried in every order, with a few wrong levers along the way ("I keep on pulling the long wrong lever"). Light on the bottom and medium in the middle gets partway, and the last stretch takes more swapping. "Nope, not there, just kidding, it should go here. Yay, us!"

Where it ends

The ladders line up, Basket climbs up into a lit mine tunnel, and the game saves. "We're saving." The video ends there.
