Pipe Puzzles, Episode 24: Quern

  • Published on

This stream of Quern picks up in the room on the roof of the brewing area, where Episode 23 ended, with the recipe for "opposite potions" in hand. Basket brews a potion to kill the vines on the metal door, solves two panels of copper pipes, finishes the last light target and pulls a box out of a well. The second half of the video is a long search for one missing piece, and it ends with the white torch finally finding its spot.

The kill everything potion

"So this is the stuff that I can use to make another potion. So we want to make the kill everything potion." The new recipe names its ingredients in the game's own words, and the commentary matches each one against sketches in the notebook: a fungus that grows on trees, "the white little upside-down tulip flower," a seed pod, "teal berries." Each gets clipped and crushed. "I forgot how much work those potions are."

One ingredient is a white dust marked with a symbol, so the commentary goes looking for a chest that carries the same mark before mixing anything. "Aha, I'm so clever. So it's not that white one."

Through the vine door

From the lighthouse, a teleport goes back to the mountaintop and the door in vines. The potion goes into the pot: "Yes, I killed the plant." The door still needs power, though: "I thought I powered that guy already, perhaps I didn't." So it is back to the tower with the light machine. A zoom key turns up ("oh there's a zoom key... that's a lot easier"), the symbol gets drawn again, the lenses are set, and "now it's powered."

Behind the door is a panel of copper pipes. Orange and white light have to be routed to their outlets, and the pipes cross and dead-end. "Okay let's work backwards." A few minutes later: "Aha, there you go, I turned it on. I get a thing. Another lens."

The last lens symbol and a harder panel

The new lens goes into the light machine, and the commentary draws the last target's symbol. The first attempt copies the wrong drawing ("I was doing the old one"), so the commentary crosses it out and starts over until the shape matches: "Does this match what we need? Yes."

That powers a second pipe panel, "the even more advanced advanced one." Here "it takes the high power energy," the white power, and "it splits it in two," so the two halves have to be joined again at the one combining piece. After a lot of turning, it pays out a heavy metal weight with a ring on top. "A gigantic paperweight. I'm so excited."

Down the well

The weight gets tried on pressure plates, pedestals and the lighthouse. Then: "Can I hook it onto the well. Yes." On the chain, it drops into the water and comes back up with a dripping metal box. "We have a safe with a puzzle piece inside of it."

The piece goes into a glass case in the building the commentary calls the gear house. "Oh, now I need one more piece."

One more piece

The rest of the stream is a search. The blue torch goes around for hidden writing, the light machine gets spun until the whole thing lights up, and the mine, the lab and old rooms all get another look. The commentary asks for hints along the way. A viewer says "you have the thing to use already," later that the "instinct to use some kind of torch is correct." Asked for a location, the viewer says it is something "you interacted with very early on in the game." Asked at last which torch, the answer is the white torch.

Where it ends

The white torch goes into a holder under a brass viewer on a wooden deck. Through it, the small device out on the rocks becomes a lit lamp on a post. "That really doesn't even feel satisfying." The case in the gear house now glows red inside, and a red piece shows in the inventory. The video ends at a post with three slotted bars, the inventory open on the red piece, a round handle and a key: "How would you ever think of that? We need an X."
