Stoned Person, Episode 3: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 3 of The Witness picks up among the apple trees, where green panels show branching tree shapes. Basket works through them, routes power in a stone tower by a windmill, then heads underground to a room of panels with symbols the commentary can't work out yet. The video ends in a village, by a stone statue with its arms in the air.

The tree panels

Each green panel shows a tree shape, and the commentary checks each one against the trees around it. One panel has "different amounts of broken branches," and then there's "no apple." The answer turns up on a second look: "there was an apple, but it's on a broken branch." A line up into the right-hand branches does it. "Yes!"

Nearby, a wall of paper sketches of trees and a drawing on a table get a look. One drawing makes the commentary stop: "It's a heart."

The windmill

Past the trees is a view of a village, and a stone tower with a green maze panel on its door. With that solved, inside is an orange panel set in the floor with dots on its middle line and two exits. A line out one side lights a cable running up to a hatch overhead, and the other side does too. "They both go up. That's kind of weird." Outside, the windmill sails are turning.

Underground

Steps lead down to a dark basement: "Spooky basement is spooky." A long tunnel ends at a teal panel of white squares, and the commentary tries splitting the squares up: "Separate the things. Maybe like this? Yes, good."

Next is a room with red walls, a white panel of hexagons and a small panel set in the floor. Lines go onto both, but the commentary isn't sure "where you're trying to get to."

Star symbols

On the far wall are two teal panels. The left one has white squares and two small star-shaped symbols at the bottom. "I don't know what these symbols are." Tracing lines makes some marks go away, and a pattern shows up: "Seems like they only interact with the white." No line solves it. "This puzzle is not clear to me yet." The right panel, with yellow marks in the corners, is no better: "Nothing errors, nothing happens." The commentary wonders whether "there might be hints in another puzzle."

Where it ends

After a few more tries at the hexagons comes "I give up on this, I will return to this area." Back up the tunnel, the orange floor panel gets switched to the other direction. "I don't really understand what that does." Outside, in the village, a stone statue stands with both arms raised. "That's about how I feel about some of the puzzles." The view turns to a dark tower and the video ends. The star panels and the hexagon panel are still unsolved.
