Episode 8 of The Witness starts beside the hedge mazes from Episode 7. A maze panel built from those mazes sets off a machine that fires a beam, and then come panels solved by walking on glass floors. The video ends on the way back from a wrecked ship, with the panel inside it unsolved.
The maze on top
"I didn't realize there was a path down there." Stairs and a ladder lead to the top of a tower over the hedge garden. Up there is an orange maze panel in four quarters, with the start in the middle. "These are all those mazes down there. Am I supposed to remember how I solved them?"
"I can't see when I'm over here." So it's back down to the hedges to take screenshots of the mazes. "I don't think this is cheating, because I already solved these puzzles." Back on top, the line goes through each quarter in turn. The whole panel lights up yellow.
A beam from the tower
Next comes a rusty tower where a yellow machine hangs from the roof. The machine turns and fires a thin beam out of the window toward a green mountain. "All right, I've beaten this area, sort of."
Lines on the glass
A dark tunnel leads into a walled yard of glass floor tiles, statues and panels on posts. Walking on the glass draws the line on the panel. "Whoa, it's like a person doing it." The first grid panel has gaps that match gaps in the floor, so the commentary plans the route first, "up two, over one, up one," then walks it out across the tiles. "Yes!"
The next panel is purple, with white and black squares. "I guess separating out the white and the black." The floor has broken paths "that are not indicated on this map." A pink trail follows each walk across the glass, and a line goes in, but nothing on screen marks a solve. "Now what am I supposed to do?"
The ship
Stairs and a metal walkway lead down to a rusty, wrecked ship at the water's edge. Inside, in a dark red room, is a tilted grid panel with large and tiny dots on it. The line keeps stopping short. "It maxes out, like, it won't go any further."
The ideas pile up: a fixed length to work with, getting all the large dots, something "about the ship" itself. "I can't get to the middle, no matter what I do." Then: "for now I'm gonna say I'm stuck on this one and I will return."
Where it ends
Basket climbs out of the ship and walks along the grass by the water, past a brown armchair on the lawn. "Let's go back into the castle." The video ends going up metal stairs into a stone stairwell. The ship panel and the purple panel in the glass yard are still open questions.
