Tetris Blocks, Episode 9: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 9 of The Witness is about panels with small yellow block shapes on their grids. Inside sandstone walls, a panel that has to be walked out on a glass floor stays unsolved. Out in the grass, rows of these panels start to give, and a gray one opens the way across the water. The video ends on two red panels in a metal cage, one solved and one still refusing every line.

The floor in the walls

The video opens in a sandstone passage. A small green panel on a post shows a grid with little yellow shapes in its corners, and nearby is a floor of glass tiles over wooden beams. "Oh, this is another one where I have to walk over stuff." Walking the tiles lights a cyan path across them. "Perhaps I should try and make those shapes." A four-long piece comes together, but a broken spot in the floor is in the way: "I can't put it there because that thing's broken."

"I don't know how to solve that puzzle." A purple panel with a pink floor around the corner gets the same answer, and the commentary heads out: "I think I'm going to exit the castle and go explore somewhere."

Shapes in the grass

Past gardens and a little brook, a row of yellow-green panels stands in the tall grass, each with small block shapes on its grid. "So I'm trying to draw those shapes." Some lines work on a guess ("I feel like I'm just making up answers, it seems like it's working"), and wrong ones flash an error. "I like when they give me error messages." A line can't cross itself, and pieces seem to add up: "So this plus that." Panel by panel the rows light.

A gray panel in the grass is next, with three shapes on a long grid. After a few tries: "Oh this might work, yes!" And then: "I'm getting access to the other side I guess." Then comes a wait "for this very slow thing to cross," and Basket is over the water.

The red panel

Up a set of metal stairs is a red panel with a row of four small squares and two short bars, next to a dark one. "This is sort of the same thing we've been working on." The four-square shape takes a line ("this four is happy when I do that shape"), the bars do not: "I have the four cross and I have the three ups, but none of them are happy." Line after line follows: "What about this? No." It is still unsolved when Basket moves on.

The cage

Inside a metal mesh cage are two more red panels. The first lights up yellow, with a line winding across the whole grid. The second won't. "Definitely a stumper." The commentary asks for "a vague guess," "something that would get me on the path." A viewer suggested going all the way up the left side. That gets a bunch of the shapes, "but then that one's still no good."

Where it ends

With the second cage panel still dark, Basket walks out and back toward the red panel by the stairs. "Let's go back to this." The video ends there. The glass floor and the purple panel in the sandstone walls, the red panel by the stairs, and the second cage panel are all unsolved.
