Episode 16 of The Witness starts in the treetops. Basket boats to a new shore, opens a red-doored building with a tree inside, and ends stuck on a panel in a garden trellis.
Back in the boat
"So we made a lot of progress in this area," the commentary says on the tree walkways, then heads down to a dock and the boat with its map panel: "I'm stumped so I'll hop in the boat." A line on the map sends the boat across the water. The boat stops at a sandy beach under red cliffs.
Panels with no errors
Up from the beach, a blue panel by a doorway holds two white squares and two black ones on a 4 by 4 grid. Line after line goes in, and none of them flashes an error. "When there's no errors I don't know what, I can't figure out the rules." Basket leaves it.
Further on, past power cables and a green camouflage panel that is switched off, a gold lattice panel offers "a lot of combinations," and the commentary decides against brute force.
Errors at last
In a rock wall among ferns sits a dark lattice panel. "Okay, so good. We have errors now." White lines and failed purple ones follow, and none of them lights the panel. "I'm sure there's something about this that makes sense."
The red doors
Past a kneeling stone statue with its arms raised ("Okay, we have a dude"), steps lead up to a building with tall red doors. Two small orange panels each take one straight line, and the doors swing open. Inside, red leaves cover a white floor and a small tree sits in a stone planter. A line traced around the planter's rim lights it orange. "I opened up the windows, how interesting."
The rest of the room stays dark. "It seems like we need to get power to these things." A cable leads back outside and stops at a dead end.
Two trellis panels
A small blue panel on a gatepost takes a single line, and the lattice gate beside it opens. Across a bridge, a wooden trellis holds diamond-shaped panels. The first takes a few tries, then a red line runs through it and a red cable lights toward the next. "Oh, okay, I figured that out for some reason."
The second is harder. Clicking it pulls the view to one fixed spot, and a wrong line resets it: "they don't want you to brute-force it." The commentary wonders if the answer is in the plants behind the lattice, then goes back inside the building to check a window. "Doesn't seem very promising."
Where it ends
Back at the trellis, Basket looks at the second panel for over a minute: "there's a bamboo thing there ... There's some leaves there. There's a rock." No line sticks. The view turns to a darker third panel further along, and the video ends on the walkway beside it with the second panel unsolved.
