Episode 17 of The Witness starts back at the garden trellis. Basket gives up on it, revisits old panels with no luck, then climbs to a snowy peak where two beams of light meet. The video ends in a marsh, with two block-shape panels solved and a third just switched on.
Leaving the trellis
The second trellis panel is still unsolved. A viewer's idea is read out, to use "only nodes with leaves under." The commentary answers, "I think I tried this. It wasn't that happy about it." After a look at the dark third panel, it is "continuing on," across the river and back into the town, past "the first stone person we saw."
Old panels, no errors
A panel set in a window has yellow block shapes along the top and pink stars lower down. "Now we know some more logic so we actually may be able to figure this one out." Line after line goes in. "Nothing error-ed, interesting." A door panel of colored stars fares no better: "by the logic I have for the suns, this is not possible."
Inside the windmill, a teal panel fades out some of its white squares when a line is drawn, "but I don't know what my end goal is." The commentary sums it up: "if there's no rules, you just get pretty stuck."
Up the peak
A path leads to a yellow lift and a long climb. "There's no, you can't walk off the edge in this game. So that's helpful." At the snowy top, stone figures stand around a dark opening, one carrying a yellow box on its back. Overhead, two beams of light meet. "There are two beams that come in here," the commentary guesses, and solving more of them may unlock what is up here.
A yellow panel on a stand shows a black winding line, with the island spread out below. Traced, it turns white. "Yes, it's the shape of the river." It "doesn't seem to do anything."
Back in the boat
On the way down, a blue panel stops the line partway ("I can't move any further that direction") and gets left. A path toward purple water is blocked: "that puzzle's not solved yet. So I can't go that way." Basket takes the boat back out. "I don't foresee me ever beating this game," the commentary admits on the ride.
Shapes in the marsh
Walkways cross purple water to a row of orange panels in tall yellow grass. The first holds small block shapes, and the commentary talks through the rules while drawing: the shape "can be rotated though." The line lights the panel. "That's how I did that one."
The second has two shapes that seem to need combining, and it takes a long run of tries.
Where it ends
"Okay here we go. I keep on trying to combine it all together but they don't really have to be." The second panel lights, and the third panel beside it switches on with shapes of its own. The video ends there, with the third panel untouched and the trellis panel from the start still unsolved.
