Branching Out, Episode 26: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 26 of The Witness starts in the town by a stone statue and heads out past a windmill to a yard of red wooden walls. Almost the whole video goes to one kind of panel: grids with the shadows of trees falling across them. It ends on a stubborn panel behind a wooden frame, solved just before the video stops.

Branch shadows

In the yard, a blue panel on an orange wall gets a quick try and is left: "it wasn't clear to me what I was trying to do." Nearby, yellow grid panels stand under trees, with branch shadows across them. "I'm fairly sure that what I have to do is just avoid the shadows for the branches." It works, and then it gets harder: "my shadow is now involved also." One panel only plays fair once a door is open, since "the door was blocking the light." Before going on, the commentary asks viewers not to give hints yet.

Bars and vines

The next panels are pink grids under a broken lattice roof, so the shadows are a mix of tree and wood. "There's bars, but I'm gonna ignore the bars." Vines get the same treatment, and the rule becomes "just look at whatever is actually trees." A downed branch and a bundle of branches in "that weird shape" get the same question each time: "What is actual tree, in this case?"

Metal in the woods

Deeper in the woods, orange metal sheets stand next to purple panels. Part of one panel is hidden "because this thing is in the way," so the line has to "follow the same pattern that's putting on the metal, but we have to look at it funny." Then the shadows stop lining up. "I feel like the whole tree is shifted," and the guess is that it is "over by two." It takes several tries before the line goes through: "I had to line that up with the original shadow."

Fallen signs

Past a white sign lying in the grass, the panels change again. "This is another that's tipped over," the commentary says, and a long route up, over and around the grid gets a "Yes! Okay, great." The next one has not tipped over, yet its pattern seems to sit one spot along. "I'm not really sure why that is, but it's alright, we'll just go with it." That one goes in too.

The last panel

The final panel stands behind a wooden frame thick with leafy shadows. This one takes the longest. "I seem like I don't have room for what I think the puzzle is." Counting points along the right side does not settle it. Then the commentary notices that the shadows "are really shifted down," plans a line that dips and cuts back up, and says, "I think this is the solve. Yes!" The cable lights up green and the video ends.
