Frozen Birds, Episode 29: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 29 of The Witness moves through two buildings full of machinery: a wooden one stacked with logs, with a crane and a boat landing, and a white stone works with conveyors, sand piles and statues. The three-pointed symbol from last time turns up on almost every panel. The video ends with a row of red and green square panels solved and a cable lit.

Catching up

The video opens on a row of panels with pink dots, already solved. The commentary walks back through them, says a few more were done before the recording caught up ("You just, you missed it all"), and sums up the symbol: it "has to negate something that has failed."

By a window, a green panel on a stand takes several tries, then moves something across the building: "I don't really know the purpose yet." A post by the water calls a boat ("it's going to request the boat"), and a crane can be swung over a conveyor or out the side. "Note to self. I'm able to do that." Following the power outside, the commentary spots a beam running to a yellow box on a white cliff, "the big gun that's supposed to mark your progress."

Dots and colors

At a white stone building, a green panel and a blue panel sit on an orange wall. The green one turns out to be about "covering up all the dots," the blue one about keeping "the different colors" apart. Both go through, and a metal shutter rolls up over a set of tracks.

Ramps, stairs and frozen birds

Inside, a panel on a green stand has two answers: one "is gonna make the ramp go up," the other makes it go down. Basket raises it. A row of panels by piles of sand mixes the symbol with dots, and the trick is to leave one dot unsatisfied so the symbol has something to cancel. That brings power to a control box, and a conveyor can be set up or down.

Up top: "What are these? Little frozen birds." Past them, a panel of purple and yellow squares runs the stairs, a shortcut that "allows us to get up and down."

Red and green squares

Next comes a row of dark panels with red and green squares and the symbol. On the first, "the green dot's happy because it's by itself," and the symbol takes care of the rest. The second goes quickly. The third, a four-by-four grid, takes five minutes: "we only have one negation object." It finally takes a line that winds up through the middle, and one red square goes dark.

Where it ends

The next panel adds cyan squares and a blue one: "I think the solution might just be this. Awesome." The last sits in front of gray statues of people, "more frozen people." The first try leaves both sides "unhappy." An S-shaped line works, a green square goes dark, and the commentary says, "what have we done, you powered things." Basket follows a lit cable down a staircase as the video fades out.
