Episode 33 of The Witness starts in a dark room with red curtains, where a hexagon panel sets a film playing. Then a door panel on the desert shore will not come together, and a boat ride leads to a mountain with a yellow path painted down its cliffs. The video ends with that path drawn from the moving boat and sparkles climbing the mountain.
A film in the dark
The video opens in a passage leading to a dark room hung with red curtains. A white panel of hexagons sits beside a green cable. "I was looking at it from the wrong side," the commentary says, then talks through a route: "loop around here, cross, go this way, and then this way, and then exit here."
A screen at the front lights up, and a filmed talk about science, knowledge and change plays for almost four minutes. Its closing card reads "Yesterday Tomorrow and You, written and presented by James Burke." Then: "Well, I certainly didn't expect that."
A smaller panel with a squiggle sits near the screen. The commentary guesses it is "a second combination" that plays another video, and leaves it rather than "have that play again right now."
A door on the desert shore
Next stop is a door "by the shore in the desert" that the commentary remembers as one it "could not figure out how to open." A tunnel leads out to the sand and down stairs to a gray door in the rocks. Its panel is a dark grid with small blue squares and yellow block shapes. "So these are negation blocks."
The trouble is getting the shapes "to be inside the same region." Lines zigzag across the grid row by row, and none pass. "I know I have all the tools for this puzzle," the commentary says, just not how to arrange them. After about six minutes Basket walks away: "I'll come back to this."
Calling the boat
At a dock, "there's no boat here, hopefully I can request the boat," and a boat sails in. A route drawn on a map of the island at its desk sends it off. On the way, the commentary picks out "this color thing" on a mountain, yellow paint running down the red rock, and wonders whether it can be drawn on.
Drawing from the water
From the boat, the line will not start at first. Then: "Can I draw as we go around?" A line starts at a yellow circle near the top and follows the paint down the cliff and along the waterline as the boat glides past. Partway through, "Oh, no, I clicked the button," and the run has to start over.
The second pass gets all the way around and the line climbs a yellow stripe toward a building with a green screen. "Up, up, up... You can do it. Yeah!"
Where it ends
Sparkles rise up the stripe toward the summit, where several beams of light meet. "Sparkly dust. I did it, everybody." Then the end card. The desert door and the second panel in the film room are still waiting.
