Greenhouse, Episode 34: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 34 of The Witness picks up as the sparkles from the last video climb the mountain. Basket follows them into a bamboo forest, then opens the door of a glass building full of plants, where panels of colored squares take up the rest of the video. It ends upstairs by a yellow window, with one panel still unsolved.

Following the sparkles

The video opens on the last seconds of Episode 33: "You can do it. Yeah! Sparkly dust." The commentary is "not really sure what I did," only that "something shot over there," so Basket goes to look. A path leads past a waterfall into tall bamboo. "Wait, this is a new area. I have not been here." The commentary spots "a laser gun" for "this jungle stuff that I haven't solved yet" and finds a shortcut toward the top of the mountain. Then the plan is the building nearby: "let's see if we can solve this to get inside."

Into the greenhouse

The door panel follows a rule from before, "keep them separate," and opens on "a little botanical place." Inside, blue panels hold small colored squares. Keeping the same colors apart is not enough. Then: "I kept all the dots together also." Sectioning off the green first works, and a row of panels lights up one after another, a cable glowing white behind them.

Two blue grid panels side by side on a wooden wall, each with a white line drawn through it from the round start at the bottom left, white, purple and green squares in the cells, and a glowing white cable running off to the right

The H problem

A four by four panel with pairs of cyan, white, yellow and pink squares stops everything for about seven minutes. Every plan needs one line through the middle to split two colors and another to keep the pairs together. "So you have an H, but you can't make an H." The commentary asks anyone watching, "you don't have to tell me any hints, but do you think you know what the answer is?"

A blue four by four panel holding pairs of cyan, white, yellow and pink squares, a white line winding from the round start at the bottom left up through the middle to the top, beside a finished panel with a zigzag line on its left

The line that finally works drops that idea: "So they don't have to be together." A bigger five by five panel beside it goes in soon after.

Upstairs

In "the greener area," a white-framed panel by a window onto the sea holds squares in six colors. Wrong lines get no feedback at all: "It's not going to error at all." The commentary reads it like paint, "almost like a palette." A walk around turns up a very purple room and a door that stays shut until "these things over here" are solved.

Through the yellow window

Then a find: "Everything is very yellow when you look at it through this window." Through the glass, "the only thing that shows up is red," and the rest turns white or black.

A room seen through yellow glass, everything tinted yellow except three bright red panes on the far wall, small panels with drawn lines beside them and a flowering plant on a stand

Seen that way, the white-framed panel is "a different puzzle." A route up and around goes in, and the cable lights. "Amazing."

Where it ends

The next panel along, with green, yellow, blue, pink, red and black squares, will not take a guess: "if you try to brute force it, it's gonna say no." After a few more tries: "Well, this will take a little longer than I thought." The video ends looking into the yellow room with that panel unsolved, then the end card.
