Episode 46 of The Witness opens among the panels wrapped around pillars in the water. Two pillars go quickly. The third takes about 26 minutes, most of it spent drawing the puzzle out on paper. Once it is solved, a lift carries Basket up out of the cave and over the island, and the video ends in a long white tunnel.
Two quick pillars
The first pillar has suns and dots, and the line keeps looping the wrong way: "everything was fine with that except for the suns." A few redraws later: "Okay, so the suns are together." The next one has "some dots we have to draw through, and no broken spots," and it goes in within a minute. "That's simple enough, right?" Across the water a gate frame stands past a path of stepping stones, and the commentary thinks it is close: "We're almost to a thing."
The super hard puzzle
"We have to do one more puzzle." This pillar is a grid of white dots, black dots and suns, and since the panel wraps all the way around, a line drawn on one face also turns up on the other side. Basket counts it out, "six spots wide" and "five blocks high," and copies it onto paper with a pen, noting that "the edge of this paper is also over there."
The rules the commentary works from are to keep the suns together and keep the black and white dots apart. Attempt after attempt fails on one or the other: a sun ends up "grouped with a black dot," or the line closes off the exit. "This is really a complicated puzzle." Basket starts marking on the paper the spots any line has to pass through, then wishes for a whiteboard. Around the 24-minute mark: "I feel so defeated. Okay. Let's just try stuff, right?"
That is what works. Starting from the top this time, the line goes in and glows white at about 29:10. "That puzzle, I don't really know how I solved it. That's okay."
Up and out
The stepping stones lead to the gate frame, which turns out to be a lift. Its sides are covered in curving white lines and green glass. "Let's close the doors, this is gonna drown us."
The lift rises out of the cave and travels over the island, past forest, orange trees, a windmill and a castle wall. Beams of light cross the sky. "So the laser guns seem to be turning off," the commentary says, and then: "So all the puzzles are turning off, gates are closing."
Where it ends
The ride stops at a gate in a stone wall with a yellow panel beside it. "This is one of the starting hallways." Past a dark corridor is a round white tunnel with a small yellow panel far ahead. "Well I guess that's it," the commentary says, adding, "I think that there might be more stuff, but so many questions." The picture goes black, and the end card follows.
