Into the Nether: MHC Max Writer Challenge Episode 3

  • Published on

Day three of the Max Writer Challenge, and Basket is still short on food. The plan hasn't changed since last time: get to the Nether. What has changed is that Basket now knows where to look for lava.

A walk to a lava lake

The oak by the river comes down first, and Basket eats an apple to heal up. Then the iron goes into armor: "I'm gonna make a little bit of armor. Make myself a little bit more, I guess, survive a little longer." Watching some of the other entrants' videos on the same seed turned up a lava lake, so Basket packs up the supplies and walks there across the desert. There's no sprinting on the way, "just because I want to make sure that I don't starve." The lake is there, sunk into the sand.

A frame with nothing to light it

Basket builds a cobblestone mold, sets water flowing beside it, and scoops lava with the bucket to turn it into obsidian one block at a time. The frame goes up. Then the catch: "One other downside to using up all your iron is that you don't have any iron." All of it went into the armor, so there's nothing to make a flint and steel with. "So now I have a portal frame with no iron. Well, shucks." As the sun sets, Basket walls the spot in with cobblestone, puts up torches and digs a staircase down beside the portal.

One iron ore

The dig turns up coal first, then iron ore, which goes straight into the furnace. By the time Basket climbs back up it's night, and zombies are standing outside the cobblestone wall. The portal lights, and Basket steps through.

Brown mushrooms only

"Looks like I'm in a cave, so it's pretty safe." Basket starts a timer, guessing about eight minutes are left in the day, and takes a screenshot to note where the portal is. Red mushrooms are the goal: "So if we can get any red mushrooms, we'll be good to go on food." There are zombie pigmen everywhere, and Basket finds out it's fine to walk right past them without a fight. The mushrooms are another story. Brown ones keep turning up, and no red. "I do have an apple, and that's it."

No bow, and a ghast

Basket already knew the risk: "No bow, so I have to be careful with ghasts." One finds Basket out in the open. Basket ducks behind cobblestone blocks for cover, but a fireball blows up right against them, and the hearts drop from full to about six and a half. Basket tunnels into the netherrack and works back up toward the way in. "There's our way back."

Saplings in the Nether

On the way, Basket remembers the saplings. "If I planted them in the overworld, they wouldn't really grow, but I could have planted them in the Nether." Two go into dirt on the netherrack floor.

Basket makes another pickaxe and starts tunneling toward where a Nether fortress might be. There's a backup plan for food, too: "I can kill pigmen with gravity blocks, potentially, to get rotten flesh from them if I can't find a red mushroom." The tunnel keeps going until Basket calls it. "I guess I will go ahead and end the episode here, because it is probably the end." Basket is alive, deep in a netherrack tunnel, with one apple and still no red mushrooms. The credits roll after that, with no gameplay after them.
