A Zombie Spawner: MHC Max Writer Challenge Episode 5

  • Published on

Day five of the Max Writer Challenge starts in daylight at the lava-lake portal inside the cobblestone wall. This time Basket has company: a recording buddy on a voice call who talks through the whole day. Only Basket's screen is in the video. Basket also has coordinates for a spawner, and on the call the day gets a name: "cheatfest."

Leaving the portal

Basket knocks a gap in the wall and walks off across the sand. "I'm gonna miss you, portal." There's a quick inventory check first: "I've got lots of wood, I've got saplings, I've got dirt." Then Basket starts digging straight down into the desert with the debug screen up. Before going too deep there's a stop to plant a sapling on the surface. "Before I waste all this time going down here, I'm gonna probably plant some trees."

Straight onto the spawner

The shaft opens into a mossy cobblestone dungeon, and it's full of zombies. Basket fights them off with a stone sword right next to the spawner, then goes through the two chests. They hold wheat and music discs, among other things. A furnace goes down, and gold ore comes out as ingots.

Gold and diamonds in the ravine

Gold is what Basket really wants, so the next tunnel heads for a ravine. There's lava along the way, and Basket pours water over it from a bucket. Diamond ore shows up in the walls. Gold is harder: "I'm not finding gold or redstone or anything. I think I went to the wrong place." Some turns up after a while. "Oh, there's some gold right there, good."

A second spawner

Further along the ravine, Basket spots something. "Oh my goodness. Is this what I think it is?" The voice on the call asks if it's another spawner, and it is: a second dungeon. Its chest has a bucket in it. "Oh, another bucket. That would be handy." Basket blocks the room off for now and has to pick one: "Do I want to use my own spawner or do I want to use the one that I cheated?"

A workshop around the spawner

Basket settles into a dungeon and starts building. Cobblestone and slabs close in the walls, and four furnaces, a crafting table and a brewing stand go in around the spawner. Basket crafts a fermented spider eye, fills water bottles, and explains the recipe: "So I take the water bottles, put in the fermented spider eye, and then put in the gunpowder."

Zombies in the slots

The spawner keeps working. Zombies show up in narrow cobblestone slots around the room, and Basket deals with them using the stone sword. It all ties back to the plan from day one: there are no villages in this world, so any villagers will have to come from zombies.

The day ends at the crafting grid, with Basket alive in the dungeon and working through a stack of iron ingots, when "To Be Continued..." comes up. The credits roll after that, with no gameplay after them.
