Pretty Good Nether Trip: MHC Underground Episode 5

  • Published on

Day five of Underground, Michael Deering's February 2014 challenge, picks up right where day four stopped: inside the nether fortress, with the fire still coming through the walls. Somebody jokes that their PG rating is gone, and somebody else fixes it: "P.G. stands for pretty good."

Blaze rods at last

It starts hot. "Oh my gosh, get on fire!" "I'm half dead." Basket's hearts drop to six before they climb back. Then the reward shows up: "Oh, it's so many blaze rods! Give me the blaze rods!" The count goes up fast. "I have three now." There is a kill zone by the blaze spawner, and standing in it turns out to work. "This is actually pretty ingenious." By the time they move on, someone has four, and a blaze rod sits in Basket's inventory.

Fortress loot

Somebody's pick breaks, zombie pigmen wander the netherrack outside, and the advice is not to hit them. Back inside the fortress, Basket starts placing torches. "Wow, Basket, I'm so proud of you." Then a chest. "One, two, three. Dibs on diamonds." Inside are two sets of gold horse armor and a diamond. "You're gonna look so pretty dressed up like a horse." A second chest holds a gold sword, gold ingots and more horse armor.

The real find is a patch of nether wart growing on soul sand in a fortress room. Basket digs it up, soul sand and all, with Scoti_Garbidis close by.

Back to the spawner rooms

Basket and Scoti_Garbidis walk back across the netherrack past more pigmen and step through the portal into the lava cavern. At the spawner rooms, Steel_Douglas and Max_Writer are at the base, where the sugar cane has grown in tall along the water. "Holy moly, this is what I've missed the last two days."

A brewing corner

A tree has grown underground with some bone meal, and it gets chopped and replanted. The nether wart goes into soul sand near the spawners: "Just want it as close as we can put it to the spawner." A brewing stand goes down beside the wart. The diamond count comes up too. "I have four diamonds." "Do we have a diamond pickaxe yet?" Not long after, a diamond pickaxe is in Basket's hotbar. The infinite water spring is another story: "Infinite spring looks like it's screwed up to me."

New caves and a creeper

With "about three minutes till morning," Basket heads out past the obsidian floor of the lava cavern and into fresh caves full of redstone and more lava. "I see diamonds! I see more diamonds." The new diamond pickaxe gets to work. The chat shows Max_Writer earning Time to Farm! A water stream breaks loose and floods a corner, which leads to an apology: "Sorry, man, about yelling about the water."

The torches get knocked out, and a strange noise comes over the voice chat. "Oh my god, it was a Slender Man or something." It turns out to be a microphone glitch. Someone is out of torches, and then zombies close in. A creeper steps out of the dark, and that settles it: "Okay, you can end the episode now." All four finish day five alive, with no death line or death screen in the episode. The credits roll after that, and nothing comes after them.
