Blue Science, Episode 9: Factorio Season 2

  • Published on

Episode 9 of Season 2 is a stream about one goal, stated in the first seconds: "Today we want to get some blue science." In just over an hour, Basket builds a blue science line, researches requester chests, sets construction robots to build a new wall, and starts making assembling machines automatically. When the video ends, blue science is being made but slowly, Worker robot speed 1 is in the research box, and the oil field is still outside the wall.

Solar panels and slow robots

Episode 8 ended with Solar energy in research. Episode 9 opens with solar panels already down, and the commentary explains that some work happened between streams: "I got solar panels up and running," laid down from a blueprint, plus a small line that makes solar panels and drops them in a passive provider chest for the construction robots. The robots are around but slow: "they're doing a little bit of work right now but they're really slow."

The problems are listed early. There is no blue science yet, blue science needs batteries, and "I have very little oil." Two pumps are running, and more oil waits farther out.

A blue science line, partly by hand

The new line starts with a furnace for steel and a filter inserter that only lets green chips through. Each blue science assembler gets four inputs, and two of them, batteries and red chips, are put on the belt by hand for now. A long handed inserter takes the finished packs out to a belt that runs down to the labs. Then Logistic system goes into research, for the requester chests that would bring the batteries over without any hand work.

The batteries run out quickly. "The reserve of batteries is out." To get more, red chip making is shut off for a while so the plastic goes to batteries instead.

Lamps, poles and a wall

While the batteries come in, an assembler starts making lamps for a passive provider chest, and the solar blueprint is updated with a lamp in its spare space. The robots then add the lamps to the panels already down. Small power poles get a line of their own, with wood dropped in by hand.

Then trouble on the edge: "Oh I have badness on that side." After the fight, the commentary counts the cost: "we did lose some stuff," and the repair robots get to work. A wall blueprint with belts, turrets and power goes down for the robots to build, with an assembler feeding ammunition along it. Two chests sit just outside the robot network, "by one square," and have to be moved before the turrets and belts get picked up.

Requester chests

Logistic system finishes about 37 minutes in. "Okay so now we have the thing I wanted." One requester chest asks for 50 batteries, another for 100 red chips, and Worker robot speed 1 goes into research. Going farther out needs another roboport, which needs red chips the factory barely has. After a scrape for chips and steel, one gets built, more ammunition assemblers go in, and the wall stretches toward the oil. A long run of solar panels follows, from a new blueprint with a lamp in each section.

Making assemblers

With time to wait, Basket automates "blue things." Filter inserters pull iron and green chips off the belts, assemblers make gears and then assembling machines, and the result goes to a passive provider chest set to hold only ten. Part of the line stops for a moment and gets sorted out. "We've automated production of blue things."

Where it ends

The last build is one more section of wall heading toward the oil, laid from the blueprint that now has a lamp in it. A corner gets belts, a turret and an inserter by hand. The commentary admits the gap: "they still might attack from this side." The plan is to fortify the area "next time" and hook up the oil, then: "But that'll be the end of the stream." Blue science is coming, slowly, and the oil is still outside the wall.
