Train Templates, Episode 10: Factorio Season 2

  • Published on

Episode 10 of Season 2 opens on a factory that grew a lot since Episode 9 left the oil outside the wall. After a tour, Basket spends most of the video building rail templates: walled blocks with turrets, roundabouts and straight-through track, saved in a blueprint book for the robots to build. No train runs yet. When the video ends, the robots are still building the newest block.

A bigger base

"So I've been busy." The commentary walks through what changed off camera: the base pushed out to take one oil field and then another, used "to get batteries and then a little bit of plastic," plus new iron and a big solar array with batteries for the night. Plastic is still slow going. Batteries come along well, but most go straight into use.

A stalled line gets fixed early. Nothing is coming out because all the iron on that belt turns into steel. A splitter and a loop of belt send plain iron up to the machines that need it.

Better ammunition is being stockpiled in passive provider chests. The new wall sections have a requester chest that asks for armor piercing ammunition, and inserters pass it along to the turrets. The catch: "these have to be within range of the orange area," so the design cannot reach far.

A blueprint book of rail blocks

Next is trains. The game shows "Character logistic trash slots 2" in research. Assemblers are already set to make some train parts, and rail gets crafted. Then Basket opens a blueprint book: one template is an intersection with a roundabout, another is a module that adds a defended wing outside the robot network. The commentary does not want roundabouts too close together "because that's what I ran into last time."

One block has a roundabout right next to another, so it gets torn down to become a straight-through. Taking the old defenses out kills the power in that area for a while.

Fixing the pieces

The straight-through build turns up problems. Some pieces point into each other when placed, which makes the spot invalid. Others face the wrong way and will not rotate. Basket removes and turns them one at a time, checking the little arrows until each points out of the block. Gates up top become plain walls. Then the new straight-through, the roundabout and the module go back into the book. "Interacting with this book is kind of clumsy, or at least I am."

Dropping the first blocks

There are no laser turrets yet, and enemies sit close by. A straight-through here would block a mining spot, so the plan changes: a roundabout goes down next to the existing block, and the old block becomes a straight-through. Both fit with only a few things taken out.

Then a straight-through goes down close to the enemies. Robots lay rail, then wait on power before bringing in ammunition. Meanwhile an older base is now on the inside, so its ammo and turrets get marked for removal to use at the front.

Where it ends

Part of the new block is defended, but the robots have not built everything. The commentary admits "we're not quite to trains moving around," and next wants templates without defenses, with walls added by hand afterward. The video ends there, with no trains running.
