Lanius Cruiser A, Run 3: Faster Than Light

  • Published on

Basket takes the Lanius Cruiser Type A out for a third time: the Kruos, on Normal with Advanced Edition content enabled. It starts with a Chain Burst Laser, an Ion Stunner, Hacking and the Emergency Respirators augmentation, and no drone system. The crew list shows Rynhart and two Lanius, Mullett and Yevon Si. The last run "ran out of fuel," Basket says, and the goals are the same as before: keep air in only one room, and get Mind Control and a battery working at once. The run ends in Sector 5, where the Kruos is torn apart for a score of 1490.

Part 1: Fuel first, then the battery

Sector 1 is a Civilian Sector. Basket hacks enemy weapons in almost every fight, and fires break out in rooms with no air to spare. At the first store the shopping is plain: "let's buy fuel so we don't run out." A ship stuck at a beacon asks for two fuel, Basket gives it, and the payback is 20 scrap. "Okay, so that was worth it." A pirate wants a crew member next. "We will definitely not surrender any of our crew."

The second store sells a Backup Battery for 35 scrap. "I feel like I should grab this so that I'm closer to that achievement," Basket says, and buys it along with fuel and drone parts.

Sector 2 is a Rebel Controlled Sector. A cloaked ship's weapons go down fast ("that wasn't too bad"), and a fight against boarders leans on the Clone Bay: "we have cloning, so it's not really the end of the world." Searching a wreck turns up "a free guy." An ion storm fight ends with the enemy giving up a System Repair Drone, though the Kruos has no drone system yet. Part 1 stops at the exit beacon.

Part 2: A missile for the nebula

Basket picks a nebula for Sector 3, the Uncharted Nebula, because "even if we have low power we do have the battery backup." The first fight is rough. The crew scramble to fix the engines and weapons, and Basket jumps away as soon as the drive is ready: "The two shields is a problem, I need better weapons."

A heavily damaged Federation ship hides in the nebula. Basket follows it to help, and another crew member joins, "better at shields."

At the next store Basket is short on scrap, then settles on a Hermes Missile for 45: "That would do three damage right away." The System Repair Drone gets sold. The missile earns its place quickly. A pirate surrenders for missiles and a drone ("I'm impressed"), and the last fight of the part is a Rebel ship with two shields. Several missiles miss, and the Kruos jumps out mid-fight to the Pirate Controlled Sector. "Usually I end it before I jump, but that was in combat."

Part 3: Mind Control, at a price

Sector 4 is the Pirate Controlled Sector. At a burning research station, Basket docks to rescue the survivors and gets one more crew member. A pirate with three shields surrenders and hands over missiles. At a store Basket upgrades the weapons system and buys a Heavy Laser Mark II, then finds it takes three power: "I thought it was 2 power." The Kruos slips into a Rebel station undetected and finds nothing there.

Then a store sells Mind Control for 75 scrap. "Mind control! The achievement. Of course." Basket sells the Chain Burst Laser to afford it, leaving the Ion Stunner, the Hermes and the Heavy Laser Mark II, and 1 scrap. "Okay so now if we just get into a fight we can get the achievement." The next sector is the Rebel Stronghold.

How it ended

Early in Sector 5 the Kruos meets a Rebel Rigger in an ion storm, with a drone that shoots down missiles. "This is going to be a tough one to try and survive," Basket says. Basket tries Mind Control ("we'll try it"), but the battery is down and the hull keeps falling. The Kruos breaks apart with Rynhart, Mullett, Yevon Si, Phillips, Declan and Jones aboard, and the game-over box reads "One last explosion marks your fate as your ship is torn apart," with a score of 1490. "I guess it's the end of that episode," Basket says.
