Fortress Rotation is the third episode of Basket's realMyst: Masterpiece Edition playthrough, recorded from a stream. It takes place in a new world of giant gears, which the commentary calls "the gear world." Basket explores a round fortress on the water, finds hidden rooms, and works out how to turn the whole building to reach two symbol pedestals. Their four symbols open a way to a book marked MYST, and the video ends back in the library with a red page and a blue page delivered.
The gear world
Basket arrives on a sandy island scattered with huge gears. On a gear-shaped stand sits a panel with four symbol tiles, four green buttons and a big red button. Pressing it does nothing yet. Basket starts a fresh set of notes: "There's still some room on the paper that I had for the other one." A walkway leads out to a round fortress standing in the water, ringed by a rail.
Inside the fortress
Just inside, a control stand is labeled "Fortress Rotation Simulator." Its knobs swing a glowing display around, and a lit marker sticks at certain points. "This is just a simulation, I think." In the middle of the fortress is an elevator with up and down buttons. It stops at a middle level whose door will not open. Another control turns the elevator itself, and once it is turned Basket cannot get back in.
The rooms are a mixed lot. One has barred cells, shelves of jars and a red light ("the torture room," says the commentary). Another has patterned carpet, a big chair by a window, and three glass cases holding colored stones, which the commentary compares to dice. Behind the walls are hidden rooms. In one, "Oh, there's a page." Another holds wine racks, coins on the floor and a note addressed to Sirrus: "Your greed sickens me! Your desire for wealth and plunder is never satisfied." It is signed Achenar.
Five seconds to move
The elevator beeps when its button is held. Basket counts five beeps, and on a later try steps out in time: "I have five seconds to move. There's stuff on top." The top room has a control that turns the whole fortress. Each direction makes its own sound, and the commentary sorts them out: a high ding, a card-shuffle noise, and one that gets called a cowbell.
Turning the fortress lines it up with walkways to small rocky islands. Each ends at a gear-shaped pedestal with two symbol tiles. Basket rides the fortress around to both pedestals and copies all four symbols.
Back to the library
At the panel on the first island, Basket clicks through the tiles to set the four symbols and presses the red button. A hatch in the walkway opens onto stairs down to a round tunnel, where a book with "MYST" on its cover rests on a rack. Its page shows a small picture, and touching it takes Basket back to the library.
The red page goes into the red book, and a man's face flickers in its picture ("I need all the red pages," the commentary reads along). Basket then goes back to the gear world for the blue page, which was in a hidden room near the red one, returns, and opens the blue book, where a second face appears. "This one seems like a con artist guy, but this one seems like whacko." The video ends in the library after the blue book closes.
