Sound Maze, Episode 5: Myst

  • Published on

Sound Maze is the fifth episode of Basket's realMyst: Masterpiece Edition playthrough, recorded from a stream. It opens where Episode 4 stopped, at the five sliders beside the round door in the world of sounds. Basket gets the door open, rides a small vessel down into a maze of tunnels, and maps it stop by stop by the sound each one plays. The route ends at a book marked MYST, and most of the rest of the video is a second search of the maze. It ends back in the library.

The order of the sounds

The sliders are still set from the last session, lowest number to highest, and the door is still shut. Basket goes back to the stone room with the number display and presses a button there that plays the sounds in a row. "So bottle sound, water, wind, fire, broken clock. That is not the order I did them in before."

Back at the panel, Basket sets the sliders in that order: bottle, water, wind, fire, clock. A green light comes on, and the door opens. "Yes! Good. Okay, so that was what I had to do."

Down in the vessel

Past the door, a passage leads to a yellow vessel at the end of a grated walkway. Inside, a panel has buttons marked FORWARD and BACKTRACK, two arrows to turn, and a dial showing which way it faces. The vessel sets off along a rail through a dark tunnel. "Aha! Now we are on a roller coaster."

Mapping by ear

Every stop in the tunnels plays a sound. Basket digs out notes from earlier in the game: "I had a ding, a card shuffle, a swoosh, and a cow." The stops get names by their sounds, the glass ding, the shuffle, the "stab" and the cowbell, and some are silent. At each one Basket turns through every direction on the dial, notes which ways are open, and draws the routes on paper.

A pattern shows up: "So if it's silent, it seems like a dead end." BACKTRACK turns out to be a shortcut back a stop. One dead end has a wreck in the tunnel ("I'll mark that this one had the broken ship"), and another has a steady wind noise that the commentary calls "creepy." The paper fills up fast. "I'm running out of paper on that side."

A book marked MYST

About 36 minutes in, a run to the southeast ends at a brick wall with a door. Behind it is a hall and a round room, and on a pedestal sits a book with "MYST" on the cover. "Oh, it's back! Myst." Its picture takes Basket to the library.

Basket opens the blue book, and a voice on the recording says, "Oh my friend, you didn't bring any of the blue pages." The commentary takes the hint: "So I think I need to go back there and actually find pages." Basket heads back to the airship ("So let's go back to the blimp") and is soon back in the vessel.

Where it ends

The second trip checks every route not tried yet. Most turn out to be silent dead ends. Basket gets turned around once ("Why am I... where am I?") and sorts it out from the map: "We're fine, we know where we are now." With the paper nearly full, the commentary wonders whether something was missed above ground: "So maybe on the surface there was something I missed? Possibly." Basket rides back to the book room, opens the MYST book again, and the video ends in the library.
