Natural Gas, Episode 14: Oxygen Not Included Season 1

  • Published on

Episode 14 of Season 1 is a stream that opens on Cycle 45 with 14 duplicants, most of them stressed, and not enough power. Massage tables go in, the toilets get unblocked twice, and a natural gas generator is built with gas pumped from near the steam geyser. It ends on Cycle 50 with the generator idle, the food nearly gone, and dig markers going down by the base.

Massage tables with no power

"Power is a problem, across the board." But the duplicants are "also really stressed out," so the first job is the massage tables. The Breaktime Policy on the Massage Table is set at 40: "if you have a stress level of at least 40, which is almost everybody, except for the brand new guy, then you should try and use these." They go up to priority 8, and the card reads No Wire Connected.

Soon, "finally, somebody's de-stressing." Then the catch: "they keep on trying to but then they run out of power."

Blocked pipes and toilets

On the plumbing, "Empty pipe. Pipe blocked. So the bathrooms aren't working because this is too backed up." Good water gets piped straight down with a bridge so the machine can run again. "Does it help? Yes, seems like it." Now "your bathroom will actually function."

It doesn't last. Later: "The bathrooms don't have any water, and so they aren't using them," and messes pile up on the floor for the duplicants to mop. After more pipe changes, "now you can use the bathrooms." The showers are still "not quite working right."

Natural gas from the geyser

Down below sits "so much natural gas." A gas pump there isn't plugged in, so it gets power, and the area goes to priority 7. The Steam Geyser reads Rising pressure. "There's the geyser going. It pumps out some water and then natural gas." Another gas pump goes in beside it, piped up to where natural gas can be filtered out.

A cave pocket in green and brown rock filled with orange and teal gas, a row of dig markers along the top left, and hover cards reading Steam Geyser, Rising pressure, and Polluted Oxygen, Breathable Gas, 427.1 g (Very Toxic), 44.5 °C

On Cycle 47 a Natural Gas Generator is under construction, a power source that converts natural gas into electricity. "The slowest builder possible is building this natural gas power generation here."

Two floors of the base, the upper one with machines and green funnels, the lower one hazy yellow green with the white outline of a building not yet built and pipes around it, and a hover card reading Natural Gas Generator, Polluted Oxygen, Breathable Gas, 779.6 g (Very Toxic), 24.8 °C

Building it, then the carbon dioxide

On Cycle 48 the jobs go up to priority 9: "now everybody's going to build." Then: "So it's pumping out natural gas, hopefully. Awesome. And it is producing a lot of CO2, which comes into here that I'm then scrubbing."

New pieces show up in the build menus, a Mesh Tile and a Rejuvenator. "This sounds like good things." A gas pump is putting carbon dioxide "right back into the air," so a gas filter and a Gas Pipe Bridge go in: "I want to take the CO2 and put it directly into the CO2 room." The research screen shows Medbay done and Pressure Management at 0/20, and the commentary says of the better airlock door, "research that."

The game's gas plumbing overlay with white pipes dotted orange and blue, green and white intake and output markers, a row of planned pieces in the middle, and build text reading Build Tool, Click to Build, Sandstone: 44494.1 Kg / 50 Kg, above a Gas Pipe Bridge menu

The leftover gas ends up in the same room, though, so another bridge goes in to dump it "down to the next room," at priority 9.

Where it ends

On Cycle 50 the Natural Gas Generator reads Generator Idle and Not Pumping, with natural gas sitting in its pipe. A Food shortage alert is up, and the food count has dropped from about 101,000 kcal at the start to 800. Polluted water lies around the base, and "the water supply is getting a little bit low." Dig markers go down over rock beside the base: "We have some more slime we can get here if they decide to actually mine that stuff." The video ends there.
