North Shore, Episode 8: Quern

  • Published on

This episode starts at the barred box of symbol blocks, and solving it sets off a chain: a key, a room with a letter, and at last the stone door by the slatted panel swinging open. Past it is a new stretch of shore with a dock, a forge and a lamp puzzle. The video ends with that lamp puzzle unsolved and one more key still missing.

The symbol blocks

The video opens at the box of stone blocks behind bars. With a drawing in hand, the commentary works out the layout: "I'll turn my paper around," "we want to have the percent in the bottom," "I need this block to be up here." The blocks slide around until "AHA, I found a thing," and Basket has a key.

The key doesn't fit the stone door, but it opens a wooden door lower down, into a small room with a desk, a book and a glowing crystal. A letter there reads out: "It's time you learned the truth about this island."

The door opens

"Now we have this thing. Let's put it in the door." Something from the room goes into the round lock, the slats get "the regular combo," and the lock turns. "Oh, okay, it turns out it's on." The stone door swings open, and the words North Shore show on screen. "A whole new town."

Looking around the shore

There's a round oven with a lever that takes things in and pushes them back out when its timer runs down, a small dock with a "very locked" chest, a broken ladder that would need pegs, an anvil and a grindstone that won't turn ("I guess I'm not strong enough"). A second letter says, "This is the very place where I became a craftsman." On a wooden sign, four circles have lines through them at different angles, with an arrow.

The lamps

On a rock face sits a "power switchboard" of round lamps, and in front of it a glowing lamp on a stand that turns, so "we can change these angles to light up different things." Nearby, beside some crystals, is "another key." It goes into the chest on the dock, but that chest "requires two keys," and the key is used up. "There's one more key hiding somewhere."

Copying the sign's angles on the lamp only goes so far: "I can make them be diagonal like that," but "up and down I can't really accomplish." So Basket tries every setting. "That's all the combinations." Nothing opens.

Where it ends

Basket checks for hidden writing with the blue torch and walks back over the whole area. Then a viewer suggests that something has to go into the fitting above the lamps. "Oh, that makes sense." It has two empty slots, and no object for them turns up. "I'm stuck again." The stream ends there, with the lamps unsolved and the chest still locked.
