Stuck Again, Episode 9: Quern

  • Published on

Episode 8 left Basket on the North Shore with a lamp puzzle that would not give in, a dock chest that needs a second key, and a broken ladder. This video starts right there, with nothing obvious left to try. Going back over old ground turns up a key hidden in a book, and that key opens one bar of a post in town. The video ends with Basket reading a walkthrough and heading off to try what it says.

Taking stock

The video opens with a tour of the shore. The oven "runs for a little bit and it comes back out." The chest by the dock is still locked on one side, and the ladder is "missing some rungs." At the lamps, "I tried all the different possible combinations," and the fitting above them is still empty. A boat has a gear on it with nothing to turn it. The blue torch shows no new writing. "This new section seems like I'm stuck again."

A book never opened

Then the commentary remembers something: the orange torch, "the one that can produce power," goes into a holder on a rock. "It sounds like it does something. And now we actually have access to that room." Down in the basement room is a book that was never opened. Inside, cut into the pages, lies a brass key with a round bulb for a head. "Okay, progress. How did I not look at the book last time?"

An open book on a woven mat with a square recess cut into its pages, a brass key with a round bulb for a head lying inside, next to a clay mug, a rack of glass tubes and a stack of books

One bar slides out

The key fits none of the first few things it's tried on. Then it goes into the post with three bars in the middle of town. The trick is turning it so "the tooth sticks out" the right way, and the top bar slides out. "Awesome progress."

A stone plate on a post with three pale horizontal bars behind a vertical brass strip, the top bar slid out to the left with a round brass key head set in it, and a brass panel carved with an arch and dots on the right

Nothing else seems to open, though. In another basement, a column of light rises from a stone basin, and inside it hangs "one more of those," another key just like the first, out of reach.

A tall column of clear crystal-like light rising from a round stone basin against a plank wall, with a brass key and a brass ring held inside it, and clay jars around the basin

Searching again

Basket checks the doors with symbols on them, walks the shore again, and asks the viewers for suggestions. With the blue torch, a wall shows columns of glowing symbols and white handprints. A viewer asks why the hands are upside down. The commentary has no answer. Back at the oven, Basket starts its timer and runs off to see if anything changes. Nothing does.

A gray plaster wall lit pale blue, with a column of small glowing symbols on the left and a glowing white handprint with the fingers pointing down

Where it ends

After about half an hour, the commentary decides to look up the next step. Reading the walkthrough aloud, Basket ticks off steps already done, then reaches the North Shore: "I'm gonna try to not look too much." The next line points to a canister on the bench behind the anvil and a lever to push all the way up. "Okay let's head over." Basket walks off down the path, and the video cuts to the end card before the lever is tried. The lamps, the chest and the ladder are all still unsolved.
