Mountain Top, Episode 36: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 36 of The Witness starts on the path where Episode 35 stopped, at a walled garden of red trees. Basket works through panels hidden behind shutters and branches, finds a laser already firing, and climbs to a floor puzzle at the top of the mountain.

Shutters and a tree

The commentary comes back to "this puzzle thing on the side that I couldn't figure out," wondering "if I can get these things to open." Inside, a panel runs around the base of a red tree in a stone planter, and "there's actually multiple solutions." Drawing it one way "closes the blinds over there" and "opens up these blinds," uncovering the puzzles in question.

One sits behind a wall cut in the shape of a tree, so the grid shows only between the branches. After a miss, the commentary suspects "a broken branch," goes around it, and the line goes in.

Looking from outside

A diamond panel on a wooden lattice can't be read from where it stands, "so instead I actually have to go outside and look at the thing." From outside it reads as "right one, left, maybe two right, two and then down," and it works. A door opens into a room the commentary had "seen before from the other side," and a light comes on: "you gave a shortcut and turned on a puzzle in here."

Panels behind the branches

In the room, red branches hide parts of orange grid panels. One is "like a dot matrix" and falls quickly. The next can't be solved from where it stands, so the route is called out as a string of lefts, ups and rights, and it works.

The last one stalls for about five minutes. Redrawing the planter panel to move the light doesn't help: "there's no shadows in here." The answer is in a branch piece, "the down-down, left-right-down," a part that "fell off of something in here." The line goes in and the cable turns red.

Up the mountain

Outside, a small white building is already sending a beam into the sky: "It's not even a puzzle. It's just a laser gun already? Two laser guns in one stream?"

A small white stone building with tan leaf patterns, a dark door covered in yellow crosses, a small yellow panel beside the door, and a thin red beam rising from the roof into the sky, with green and red trees behind

Next: "let's go up the mountain to see what there is to see." The path climbs stone steps past cliffs to a snowy top, and looking down, the commentary sees that "those light-y-up things are actually going to these."

Where it ends

At the top, two gray statues stand on a platform over a floor panel of yellow lines with white and dark squares, one carrying a yellow box. The job is to "keep the different dots separate." Clicking one starting spot lights up an exit elsewhere, but the statues' legs block the view: "These people are in the way." Where Basket stands changes the panel ("If I stand here, the other dots don't even exist"), but that alone doesn't solve it.

A route around the outside of the statues works: "Okay, progress. So we've unlocked that." The commentary turns to "the same thing" over here, and the video fades to the end card mid-sentence.
