Things Just Got Weird, Episode 37: The Witness

  • Published on

Episode 37 of The Witness opens on a puzzle laid into the ground: a grid of yellow lines with two gray statues of people standing on it. Their feet cover parts of the grid, and getting around them takes up the first half of the video. After that the path drops through a shaft full of furniture into white rooms, where one panel draws its line across the floor of the whole room. The edited-in title card at the start puts it plainly: "Things just got weird."

Feet in the way

"Ok, progress, so we've unlocked that. Next." The next grid has white and black squares to keep apart, and where Basket stands changes what can be drawn: "we have to see the end part, probably, right?" A statue's foot sits right on the grid. "So this guy's foot there is off limits." Some routes need a spot that can only be reached by moving, and moving is not allowed while drawing. "If I can move around while I'm drawing stuff, then that's one thing. But I can't." Then: "I'm stuck."

A vague hint

At about eight minutes the commentary asks for "a hint, but not like a straight-forward hint," and a viewer's hint comes in: "okay, that is a vague hint." It takes a few more spots on the floor and a few more tries. "I think you're right." Looking from a new angle, a route goes around the statue's feet: "yes, this looks promising." That leaves "the last one," which takes another minute of standing in different places. The line finally runs white from end to end.

Down through the furniture

Stairs lead down under the platform into a dark shaft packed with tilted desks, chairs and monitors. "What on earth?" Several screens show bright scenes of the island. "These things are also showing me where some important things are, maybe." One is a place from before: "This is one of the spots where I couldn't figure out that one thing."

Drawing on the room

At the bottom are clean white rooms, with a tall glass column of jumbled furniture in the middle of one. A pale pink panel stands in front of it. As the line moves on the panel, a purple stripe moves across the floor. "Look, I'm drawing, I'm drawing stuff in the room." The commentary spots more panels on the far walls. The first answer fails: "those two dots are the same, yeah, they're together." "Okay, plan B." The second goes in, and the floor of the room carries the same path in bright purple. "Okay, there we go."

Inside the furniture pile, a recording plays a long passage about the scientist and the pigeon each controlling the other, ending "B.F. Skinner, 1971."

Green panels behind doors

On a wall nearby, a row of small panels sits behind open cabinet doors, green squares on black. "There's always dots all over my puzzles." The first few go in one after another, each flashing as it does.

The next one blinks between dark and bright white the whole time. "Talk about obnoxious." It holds black and white dots that have to be passed or kept apart, and the lines keep missing one. After a few minutes of tries: "This might be the answer." Then: "Oh, okay."

Where it ends

Back in the white room, the purple path still runs around the furniture. The commentary sums it up: the room can be drawn on, there are "two puzzles over here" on the far wall, and "you can't walk through the middle so I'll have to resolve that puzzle later on." Then: "this game has gotten much more weird." The video ends looking at the row of green panels, then the end card.
